The Family Resource Network

The Family Resource Network (FRN) is dedicated to offering individuals and their families with continuing needs the greatest opportunities, resources and services to support a full and happy life.

The Center on Nutrition and Disability

The Center on Nutrition and Disability was launched in 2013 as a nutrition education source of the national Get FIT Movement. Get FIT, which was launched in 2008 by The Family Resource Network, aims to provide equitable opportunities for people with disabilities, chronic illness, families, and caregivers to lead a healthy lifestyle by increasing access to physical activity opportunities and nutrition education tools. The resources that live on the Center’s website can be used by self-advocates, caregivers, families, and health care professionals.

Since its establishment in 2013, the Center has implemented community-based nutrition education and cooking classes for children and adults with disabilities, allowing them to explore the benefits of healthy eating and trying new foods and textures. As an advocate for an inclusive culture of health and wellness, the Center has also assisted community-based facilities with the development of wheelchair accessible community gardens. The Center offers a series of webinars, Inclusive Standards of Nutrition, trainings such as the Fresh Foods Initiative, and nutrition focused resources for individuals with disabilities, providers and caregivers in efforts to equip them with the skills and resources needed to promote sustainable healthy eating.

Get FIT

Get FIT is an innovative national movement creating health and fitness opportunities by overcoming barriers.

Get FIT is dedicated to promoting full, happy, healthy, fit lives for people with disabilities. With the help of fitness and nutrition professionals, our partners develop individualized programs to meet the personal goals of the individual.

Get FIT was developed due to the recognition that health and wellness services are not generally accessible for all. Our goal is to change this by providing accessible services, and by training future health & exercise science professionals to serve people with disabilities, chronic conditions, and their family caregivers.

In 2008, to further the mission of improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities, The Family Resource Network established the evidence-based Get FIT program in partnership with Rowan University. The resulting Get FIT Coalition has since expanded to support the health and wellness needs of individuals with disabilities in multiple communities and states through a network of dedicated partners, collaborators, and stakeholders. The Get FIT Coalition includes current partners such as Rowan University and Stockton University, while also expanding its reach to incorporate key stakeholders who are currently involved in transformative community-based change.

Since the establishment of the Get FIT Coalition, there have been a number of programs and services launched that are devoted to our mission, including Snack, Chat, & Chill and Center on Nutrition and Disability.
